Matt Ketchum on a boat at night in Japan
Pretty good candid selfie of fear on a midnight ferry to Hell.

I’ve had this substack set up for a minute but just didn’t get around to publish, but fuck it, I’ve got enough going on to fill these pages that I’ll just blurt it all out and see what sticks.

First Up - Rare Ass Dogs

That’s a Shikoku Inu. They hunt wild boar in packs. Her name is Aki.

I’m often traveling for Akiyaz.io, and recently a friend of mine - let’s call them Terry - who is a big animal lover pointed out to the Minami Boso area, where a friend of theirs lives.

This friend of a friend happens to be a few things, including:

  • A licensed breeder and trainer of the exceedingly rare and ancient breed of Japanese dog, Shikoku Inu.

  • A licensed hunter of wild boar

  • An akiya renovator

which sounded like I needed to head over and see what’s up, and so I headed out from one of my launch pads in Yugawara for the far side of the south end of the eastern most prefecture in the Kanto region, Chiba.

Which is a real trek, I’ll tell you what. I get seclusion and stuff, but it’s always surprising at just how difficulty to access the area is given its seeming proximity to the city center. So I guess its sorta mysterious like that. And make no mistake, its nice, just further than it looks.

So I drove from Yugawara to Kurihama Port, got on a ferry, got off at Kanaya Port, drove to Minami Boso, parked at the renovated cabin, and hung out with some friends for the night, admiring the workmanship.

The next morning we got up early and headed over to the mountainside breeding grounds. Here’s a video:

I’d never thought of this particular use case, so I was extra excited to see it and wasn’t disappointed. Truly, the sky is the limit in rural Japan - if you can’t figure it out, you just don’t have any imagination. #Boring
